Recovering a damaged disk

There are basically two ways to recover a damaged Windows Vista system: the installation DVD or the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

All you have to do is locate your installation DVD and use it to boot up your damaged system. This launches the Windows Vista installation. (Don’t worry, you’re not going to reinstall Vista. All you want is to get to the “Install now” screen.)

The process begins by launching the Windows Preinstallation Environment (Windows PE), a simplified version of Windows that runs in memory only and is designed to replace DOS. Then it presents a screen which asks for three things:

  1. Language to install
  2. Time and currency format
  3. Keyboard or input method

Making a selection and clicking Next will bring you to the “Install now” screen.  What you’re looking for is the two options in the lower left corner of the screen:

  • What to know before installing Windows
  • Repair your computer

Clicking “Repair your computer” will move you to another screen that lets you choose your existing system partition. When you click Next, you’ll get a series of choices for system repair. From there on, just follow the prompts. Use the WinRE console to diagnose and repair the problem.

The problem with using the installation DVD is that you might not always have the disk on hand. If you want to make sure your system is always running, but don’t want to depend on the installation media, then you can use WinRE. The WinRE console is new to Windows Vista and is specifically designed to support the recovery or repair of a system.

It is based on WinPE  and offers features such as automatic diagnosis and repair of boot problems with the Startup Repair tool and a centralised platform for advanced recovery tools. You can even use WinRE to reinstall Windows without damaging your data, since the image-based setup Vista uses protects data during an upgrade process.

The ideal way to install WinRE is to create two disk partitions as you install Vista on your system: one for Vista and one for WinRE. This way, WinRE will be accessible if you run into system disk problems and Vista won’t start. The WinRE partition only requires 1GB of space, since WinRE is a very small system. Both partitions must be primary and active.

To install WinRE, you have to create a system image that you can install on your system. For this, you’ll need the Windows Automated Installation Kit, which kit gives you the tools you need to customise a WinPE image and turn it into a WinRE image.

Once the image is ready, you simply apply it to your WinRE partition. Full instructions for this operation are located in this step by step. Once you’re done, you’ll never be caught off guard if things go wrong on your Vista PC.

My devices or applications don’t seem to work

This is a tricky one as devices or applications may not be fully compatible with Windows Vista. If they work with Windows XP then there is a good chance they’ll still work, but sometimes with specialist devices like Bluetooth and networking devices, the drivers don’t fully work.

  1. Try Windows Update to update your drivers - make sure your Internet connection is active, then go to  Start, All Programs, Windows Update, and in the left hand pane select Turn on Windows Update. A list of compatible software and drivers will be downloaded and installed onto your computer. Make sure you check your device or application manufacturer’s website for patches and information.
  2. If you’re running 64-bit Windows Vista, then 16-bit applications will not work, and some 32-bit programs might have trouble working as well. However if not, then find the application that doesn’t work, right click it and select Properties. On the Compatibility tab, select an earlier version of Windows (such as XP SP2) and see if that makes the program run correctly.

Turn off Windows Defender

There are two parts to this which you need to complete; one in Windows Defender and the other in the services menu. This ensures that nothing about Windows Defender works and that even the background tasks are disabled and turned off.

VistaBase does not recommend that you alter these settings as Microsoft Update provides your computer with important updates that make your computer safer and more secure.

  1. Go to Start, All Programs, then Windows Defender.
  2. Select the Tools option at the top of the screen.
  3. Under “Settings”, click the Options button.
  4. Untick the “Automatically scan my computer” checkbox, the “Use real-time protection” checkbox, untick the “Use Windows Defender” and the “Allow everyone to use Windows Defender” checkboxes.
  5. Click the Save button. If prompted for administrators access, click Allow or enter in the password.
  6. Close Windows Defender. If the icon remains in the taskbar, right click it and select Exit, then click Yes.
  7. Go to Start then Run (or press the Windows key +R).
  8. Type in services.msc then press OK.
  9. Scroll all the way down the page, then double click on Windows Defender.
  10. Under the startup type, select Disabled.
  11. Under service status, make sure the service is stopped.
  12. Apply then OK, then close the Services console.

You may need to restart for full effect, but this will stop Windows Defender from scanning anything on your machine and should save you a good chunk of memory.

Windows Mobility Center doesn’t load

The reason Windows Mobility Center won’t load is most likely because you are not using a notebook or laptop computer. The Windows Mobility Center is designed for use on laptops as it provides useful and handy options for when you are using your laptop in different environments.

How to setup a dial-up connection

Typically in this day and age, dial up connections are not used, but for those of you who need VPN (virtual private networks) and dial up connections being setup, it’s not so straight forward in Vista. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to Start then Control Panel and make sure you’re on the Classic view.
  2. Double click on the Network and Sharing Center.
  3. In the left hand pane, select “Setup a connection or network”
  4. Click the third option down labeled “Setup a dial up connection” for a standard dial up connection.
Click the fourth option down labeled “Connect to a workplace” for a VPN solution.

It’s important to note, that these wizards will only work if Windows detects a dial-up modem in your computer.

Make the on-screen text bigger/smaller

Text and icons on screen can be made to appear larger or smaller than usual. In doing this, you need to alter the dots-per-inch (DPI) scale; increasing the DPI scale makes the fonts and icons appear bigger and much easier to see on screen for those hard of sight.

  1. Go to Start , Control Panel, then Personalisation.
  2. In the left hand pane, select Adjust font size (DPI).
  3. Adjust as appropriate to make the text smaller or larger.
  4. Close all the windows down then restart Windows.

The changes will come into affect as soon as you reboot.

Driver Signing in x64

One of the more annoying components in Vista x64 is the need for signed drivers. This hinders the use of many freeware applications out there (even though they come with an x64 driver) just because the driver isn’t digitally signed. About a month ago I ran into a piece of software I had to use, but alas, no signed drivers. So I set out on a quest to figure out how to permanently disable the driver signing checks in Vista x64. And guess what? I found it :).

Here’s how to get it done:

  1. Open an elevated command prompt
  2. type “bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS” without the quotes (and no the DD is not a typo).
  3. Reboot and enjoy being able to use unsigned drivers in Vista x64.

Control animation effects inside of Windows

One of the nice eye candy effects in Windows Vista is the ability to have a “fading” effect on buttons, scrollbars, and other visual elements. If you are on a low-end system or just can’t stand the effects then you can easily turn them off in a few easy steps:

  1. Click on Start, right click on Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. In the task pane on the left hand side click on “Advanced system settings”.
  3. If User Account Control prompts you for consent click on Continue.
  4. Under Performance, click on the Settings button.
  5. Uncheck “Animate controls and elements inside windows” and then press OK.
  6. Close the Advanced System Settings dialog.

Correct Disk Cleanup shortcut for Windows Vista 64-bit

If you are using a 64-bit (x64) version of Windows Vista, then this is something you should know. By default, the shortcut in the Start menu points to the 32-bit (x86) executable for Disk Cleanup. While Disk Cleanup will work fine from this shortcut for most things, there is one function that does not work correctly – the cleaning of System Restore points and Shadow Copies / Previous Versions.

Note that if you launch Disk Cleanup from another location in Windows, for instance by clicking the “Disk Cleanup” button on a drives properties window, it will launch the correct executable for Disk Cleanup.

If you want to correct the Disk Cleanup shortcut in the Start menu, follow these steps:

  1. Click on Start, All Programs, Accessories, and then click on System Tools.
  2. Right click on “Disk Cleanup” and from the context menu that appears click on “Properties”.
  3. Change the “Target” from “%SystemRoot%\SysWOW64\cleanmgr.exe” to “%SystemRoot%\system32\cleanmgr.exe”.
  4. Click on OK. If User Account Control prompts you for consent, click on Continue or provide the appropriate credentials.

What is the Windows Server 2008 logo?

As confirmed, here is a blown up version of the Windows Server 2008 logo, which can be found on numerous Microsoft websites. Please feel free to use this logo as and where you wish to, but please save this image as a file then be sure to upload to your own server. Hotlinking causes my bandwidth to exceed and can impact on the stability of VistaBase.

Easy Print

Easy Print is a new service in Windows Server 2008 which as long as you are connecting to a Windows Server 2008 machine, which basically sends all printer jobs to the local machine.

Say you are working remotely on a document on, lets say LHSERVER1 and your computer in front of you being LAPTOP2. You can edit the document and save it on LHSERVER1 but you need to print it to your machine sitting in front of you. This is where Easy Print comes in - instead of emailing the work to your email address so you can print directly from your laptop, it will allow you to print to the printer sitting next to you. This requires no drivers, no configuration, nothing special whatsoever.

From the Terminal Server blog on MSDN:

As of the 27th April 2007, the only platform that can be used as the client computer is Windows Longhorn Server Beta 3. More platforms will be available soon however. On the Longhorn Server Beta 3 client computer, the one additional step needed to ensure that printers are redirected over Easy Print is to install .NET Framework 3.0 (SP1). There are two ways to do this:

1.     Start - Administrative Tools - Server Manager - Add feature - .NET Framework 3.0
2.    You can also do it using the command line: pkgmgr.exe /iu:NetFx3

With this, all is set. We can redirect client printers as we used to normally by enabling the Printers checkbox in your Remote Desktop settings window (Local Resources - Local devices and resources). Redirected printers on the remote session will now be installed using Easy Print and do not require any configuration on the server by terminal server administrators.
