The Windows Defender FAQ - Part 1

Is Windows Defender going to be included in Vista when it is released, and if so will it be optional to run it?
Windows Defender is already included in Vista, and will be a part of the released product. It is on by default, but you can disable it if you want as it runs as a standard Windows service. Windows Defender scans are designed to run at a lower priority so it should not severely impact your system performance.

How do you uninstall Windows Defender or is not suppose to be uninstalled?
On Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 you can remove the program using the links in Add/Remove Programs. In Windows Vista, Defender may be turned off using the Services MMC but it cannot be removed.

Is the Windows Defender Team doing a blog as many teams and individual Vista team members do?
The Windows Defender team is part of Microsoft’s larger AntiMalware team which has a team blog located
here; also I participate in a number of AntiSpyware forums such as the ones on CastleCops.com  and SpywareWarrior.com

How will Windows Defender impact Windows Vista Starter? Will this be another application restricting applications down to 2 then?
No, Windows Defender will not count against the 3 application limit.

How do we report applications or programs which are picked up as spyware but actually aren’t?
False negatives again are extremely interesting to us.
This is the site where these can get reported. These get a high priority from the Microsoft spyware analysts for review since they are being detected ‘in the filed’ by end users.

Will it be possible to use Windows Defender as a part of a network and issues network wide scans easy or even from one PC/server
Windows Defender is primarily designed to help protect a standalone PCs. That said, you can map a network drive and run a custom scan to scan a network share that way.

Will Windows Defender and OneCare Live merge into one application? It would be really nice if they did.
Windows Defender and Windows OneCare Live are separate programs and run very differently.

In Windows Defender, the option to install updates is not available in the main area of the program. You have to go to help and then find the update button. Is this going to be fixed where one can find this more easily and available?
The placement of the “check for updates” button will remain on the help about dialog. The main reason is because you need to elevate privilege in order to manually initiate a definition download from Windows Update. As a result, we need to put the UAC shield icon on the button.

Is there going to be a cost for Windows Defender for Windows Vista or Windows XP? Is there a subscription cost?
Windows Defender is available for no additional charge to licensed Windows users. There is no subscription cost for Windows Defender’s signatures.

What new features will be added to Windows Defender when the product ships?
If you are asking about new features beyond what’s in Windows Defender Beta 2, or in the current builds of Windows Vista then right now we are collecting feedback from users on what they like and don’t like. Based on this feedback, we’ll make enhancements and improvements. But for the most part, Windows Defender is now feature complete.

What is SpyNet? How is the information used and why should I contribute?
The SpyNet network is a volunteer system that allows customers to send reports of potential spyware to Microsoft. This helps the analysts find out about potential spyware that our customers are running in to. In Beta 2, for unclassified software, you’ll notice a bar that shows the % of SpyNet participants that allowed that software. That is customers in the network helping provide information to all Windows Defender customers. The more participation we have in our network, the safer all of our customers are.
