The Windows Defender FAQ - Part 2

What is the average size of a Windows Defender definition update?
They have a update strategy that uses different levels of consolidation in our signatures. For regular updates, the size can be only a few kilobytes. Periodically, we will release larger updates to minimise the size of the changes we are making. Those updates will be larger, but much less frequent.

What does the Windows Defender icon in Windows Vista mean? I don’t like it, I would have preferred a shield or insect spray can.
The grey wall is the planned, final icon for Windows Defender.

Will Windows Server Update Services support Windows Defender signature updates?
 Yes.

Are there any plans to include Windows Defender in Longhorn Server, since it already includes a firewall similar to the client?
Yes, there are plans to have Windows Defender in Longhorn Server.

What is the expected release date for Defender release for XP SP2?
Microsoft have not announced a final date for the final release date for Windows Defender will be. They are still in our Beta phase of our product and we will continue to gather feedback before determining the final release date.

Is there a dedicated team to work/update the spyware definitions 24 hours, so new threat will be known and updated to every clients soonest?
Yes, they have a dedicated team of analysts which produce our definition updates and do our best to get new detection’s out to users as soon as possible.

Will there be localised versions of Defender available, or will the language stay as English?
Yes, they will have localised versions of Windows Defender. To date, they’ve announced both Japanese and German language localisation’s. Other languages are planned.

Will the licensing model for Defender allow it to be pre-installed on a corporate image-based deployment of XP SP2?
Yes, assuming that the copies of Windows are legitimate. However, Windows Defender is a customer oriented solution. Microsoft recommends that enterprise or business customers use Microsoft Client Protection for central management and control as well as full anti-malware protection.

Why has Windows AntiSpyware for Windows XP/2000 been in beta for over year now, that’s a bit long for such an application?
Using the user feedback from Windows AntiSpyware Beta 1, they completely re-wrote the code to create Windows Defender. So, instead of thinking of Windows Defender Beta 2 as just a beta update, you should really think of it as a completely new program.

Will the XP version of Defender be provided to customers free of charge?
Yes, they have stated since our initial release that the current product and ongoing definition updates are and will continue to be available to customers for free. The only requirement is that you are a Windows customer and you verify this by validating your copy of Windows. This is done through an ActiveX component when you download Windows Defender. This is the case for Beta 2 and will continue to be the case for our final release. Other speculation to the contrary is incorrect.

What are some of the unique technologies that Windows Defender includes to differentiate if from third party solutions such as Spybot and Adware?
Microsoft have built up many technologies that believe are significant differentiation’s to 3rd party solutions. One being that they offer the software and ongoing updates for free to Windows customers - no registration and reinstallation required every few months. They have software explorer which is a great tool for troubleshooting that our competitors do not offer. Windows Defender scans within compressed archive file formats, which is a significant enhancement for detection engines (we can find spyware hidden in zip files, etc), and I could go on and on, but these are some of the major differentiation’s.

Has there been any major issues crashing or failing to find spyware with Defender
They constantly monitor our Watson crash buckets and make fixes when needed. One of the coolest features of Windows Defender is that we can update our engine via the definition update mechanism. Thus, if there were crashes, they could fix them without having to require customers to upgrade their client. This works on the same technological level of how OneCare Live updates itself.

Could you tell me a little bit about integration between Internet Explorer and Windows Defender?
Yes, Windows Defender will scan files that IE downloads to ensure that customers do not accidentally install spyware by accident.
